Lolo Diklo : Roma Against Racism was founded in 1994 in Seattle
WA.
Our main purpose is to raise awareness of the truth of our existence---our
history and our culture which reflects that history. To that end, we take
the responsibility of telling our own stories through informative events
such as presentations, workshops, displays and film series; as well as
cultural performances.
We hope that in confronting anti-Roma racism we are
contributing
to the struggle against racism against any group of people. We believe
that no individual or group should be silenced.
The Roma (Gypsies as we are commonly, yet mistakenly called) are a
people who are not well known or understood. Even the term Gypsy is a misnomer
based on erroneous assumptions about our origin. We are an ethnic group
originally from India, not Egypt, as is often assumed. Many opinions of
us are based on misinformation and stereotypes ranging from that
of carefree wanderers to scoundrels and child stealers. These stereotypes are
perpetuated by self-proclaimed non Roma 'experts'. We are rarely given
the opportunity to speak for ourselves.
In reality, our history is one of oppression, persecution and
genocide which continues to this day. We believe one way to confront and
eliminate discrimination and prejudice is to present the truth.
